Website Characteristics

At first I thought microsoft.com was an ineffective, but after class I realized that it was actually an effective website. One of things I thought they did very well was using the right colors and the rule of thirds in a few pictures. I also feel like they used contrast really well by contrasting white backgrounds with vibrant colors like a pink or purple. They also conveyed their information in a few words but it was clear enough that the reader knew what was going on. They also made it very easy to find the things that you were looking for because of the tabs and they also had tabs that pertained to which type of service you needed i.e. home, work, developers, etc.

Websites

1. I figured out by talking to Natalie that I should actually not argue such a narrow topic, so by doing that I should be able to easily get to the length requirement.
2. Effective Sites: ESPN espn.go.com I think it is effective because it has qualified reports and it also always is updating the headlines so people can stay on top of the news in the sports world. Yahoo! yahoo.com is very effective because like ESPN it is always updating and it has so many different things like sports, shopping, and stocks. NFL nfl.com is an effective website because it has constant news on what's happening around the NFL and has pictures, videos, and articles for the users to get up to date. NBA nba.com is very similar to nfl.com but this has to deal with the NBA obviously. It is really cool because you can watch all sorts of videos of highlights of recent games or interviews and it is very quick to upload the new videos and news.
3. Ineffective Sites: Spotify spotify.com is ineffective because the website isn't easy to figure out how to get to certain parts of it. It also is difficult to discontinue the use of the paid services. Blackboard blackboard.byu.edu I think this website is hard to follow because there are so many empty folders that shouldn't exist if they are empty because at times I will look through at least two or three empty folders in order to find what I'm looking for. Microsoft microsoft.com is very confusing to find what you are looking for because they have the links to all of their products, but once you get to that part of the site it is confusing to find what you need concerning that product. beemp3.com is an ineffective website because it has so many links to the wrong song or songs with bad quality. I also is very annoying that it makes you constantly type in a code to make sure that you aren't a robot.

Paraphrasing

We constantly think that if something that doesn't relate to our religion but relates to others is simply a myth. We use myth is a way to describe something that is so outrageous that it can in no way be real. Which is completely different from what it really is because it used to be stories and tales that had value both educationally or religiously.
The hardest part about the paper is just the length because I don't know if there are places where I need to go into deeper analysis or to even stop in some places.

Library Research

I learned a lot more than I expected that I would when I went to the library. I was just thinking that we were going to go through the motions of searching databases and other library resources, which was true, but I also learned a lot about some sources. If anyone had asked me if it was good to use a published encyclopedia I would have definitely said yes; however, I was very wrong. So that was one thing that I learned was to stay away from these and use books and academic journals. There are, however, a few things that I am still a little confused about, but they have more to do with my topic. I just don't know what kind of information I should use to help support my claim. I probably won't be able to figure this out until next time, but it is something that I really need to know.

2-3 Well Developed Paragraphs

I'm going to write about how American Taxpayers are funding the building of a soccer field for the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay that is going to cost 750K. I think that this is absolutely outrageous because the people in this prison have committed or attempted to commit acts of terror on our country. These people deserve to be treated like humans and not receive any cruel punishments, but we as American citizens shouldn't be paying for this field. Because through some research I have found out that they already had facilities similar to the soccer field where they could do recreational activities. I wonder why American citizens should be the ones to pay for this, and also why the prisoners even needed a new field because they already have two fields.
This is very intriguing to me because this is something that American citizens shouldn't have to pay for. I also think that this is a kairotic issue because of the upcoming election. It is also interesting because these people deserve to be treated in a fair and humane manner, but a soccer field that costs 750K is ridiculous.

Peer Review/Fav. Movies

Three changes
1. I'm going to make sure to fix my tone so that it isn't too harsh on the article's author.
2. I'm going to paraphrase one quote instead of having a huge quote.
3. I'm going to continue to add more analysis.

Fav. Movies
First off I like way to many movies to have a favorite, but I'll list some of my top 10.
Hot Rod, Dumb and Dumber, All the extended Lord of the Rings, Bourne Movies, both Sherlock Holmes, and Saving Private Ryan.

Blog Post #5

Her perfume reminded of the creepy homeless guy by my house, he must have also worn that perfume.

Her skin was golden and glowing, kind of like pee when you don't drink enough water.

My love for her is like buying a new car, by the time you realize if you like it or not it's too late to take it back.

Her smile was so beautiful it was like my smile.

Her love for children was so incredible, she almost loved them as much as Michael Jackson.

Hopefully no is offended by these, cause they could a racy but I like them.

Blog Post #4

Judge Letter
Dear Judge,
I know that I have received 4 tickets in one month, but I feel like I have learned my lesson. Now I know that you think I should have already learned my lesson, but I was immature. I didn't think about how my actions would affect others, but I realize that when I speed I put people including myself in danger. If you will give me one more chance I will not make you see me again. Please consider this as my sincere apology for the danger and tragedy that I could have caused. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Cameron Jarrell

Mother Letter
Dearest Mother,
First off don't freak out. I obviously don't like to follow the rules of the road, but I have learned my lesson. You taught me that I need to drive safe because it keeps me safe. If I get to keep my license then I will always drive as if you are in the car; however, if I do lose my license then one good thing will come out of that. You will get to drive me everywhere so that means that I won't be able to break curfew. Also, if you have to drive me everywhere then we can have deep talks about life, and you can teach me from your infinite wisdom. So there is a good thing that will come out either way. You're the best.
Love you,
Cameron

Classmates Letter
Dear Class,
You know how slow the speed limit is and we have places to be. So I think that not only should I get my license, but they need to change some of the speed limits. I mean it's not like I'm killing anyone, because obviously if I've gotten four tickets and haven't gotten into an accident then I'm not driving crazy just fast. So I mean it is very obvious yes I'm speeding, but there has been no harm to anyone or anything but my wallet. Everyone speeds and if you say that you don't you are a liar. Speeding isn't a big deal unless it leads to accidents, and I haven't been in one so why should I get my license taken away.

Blog Post #3

Ok so I'm choosing to use the "Dear Students: Don't Let College Unplug Your Future" excerpt. The author wants us as students to use more technology to help us develop our resumes, help us be more prepared for the future, etc. He also bashes on colleges and how slow they are to change to appeal to our logos. I think that the author used a lot of examples of pathos by having a section called "School Impedes Education". This definitely appealed to my emotions because if I could get just as good of job as a college graduate then what is the point of being here. Obviously, that isn't what he means though. I kind of reacted; however, I almost thought it was like the crazy old guy telling you that smoking and drinking aren't bad for you. He had reasons that were well written, but the outcomes that he said came from them may have been a bit of a jump. So for me I really walked away confused and creeped out by the guy.

Blog Post #2

The first mistake is "Wyview Park and Heritage Halls have visiting hours just like Helaman Halls, however their visiting hours are every day for around ten hours." This sentence is a comma splice because I joined two independent clauses with a comma. The corrected sentence should look like this "Wyview Park and Heritage Halls have visiting hours just like Helaman Halls; however, their visiting hours are every day for around ten hours."
The second, third, fourth, and fifth mistakes are "Unlike in the summer and fall semesters where students are able to socialize outside due to the nice weather, they don't have that luxury in the winter semester." This sentence is a comma splice for the same reason as the first mistake. The other mistakes are that summer, fall, and winter semesters are all proper nouns so they should be capitalized. I may have just cheated but there are five mistakes so I'm just going to write the revised sentences with the four mistakes fixed, "Unlike in the Summer and Fall semesters where students are able to socialize outside due to the nice weather. They don't have that luxury in the Winter semester."
On the issue of peer reviews I really find them helpful because the more people that read your paper the better it can be. I also think that when you look over your own paper you tend to miss some of the grammatical errors unless you are specifically looking for them. Whereas, when someone else reads them they are able to see a lot more mistakes, and when there are three to four different people looking over it the mistakes will most likely all be found.

Assignment #1

I found a fallacy in an article talking about how many of the politicians are attacking Mitt Romney. The article was on abcnews.com. "Here we see the frontrunner who is out there with one of the most liberal records in the field, certainly the most liberal record in the field, go out and try to tear down other folks instead of talking about what he wants to do for this country" Through this quote by Rick Santorum we see that he realizes that Romney is beating him in the caucuses so he is using the strawman fallacy. This fallacy consists of people not arguing against the other person, but they just start attacking the person with whatever they can think of.

I read the other speech from Henry V and found examples for ethos, logos, and pathos.

The examples of pathos were "If your pure maidens fall into the hands of hot and forcing violation?" and the second was "Your naked infants spitted upon pikes". These both are pathos because they relate to the emotion of the audience.

The examples of ethos were "A name that in my thoughts that becomes me best" and "If I begin a life of battery once again, I will not leave the half-achieved Harfleur". These both make the audience trust the audience because in the first he puts himself on the same level as the others meaning that he sees them as equals and you trust your equals. The second appeals to the audience because they see that he will not leave the battlefield unless he is dead, which develops trust because they know that he would not leave them alone.

The examples of logos were "Your fathers taken by the silver beards and their most reverend heads dash'd to the walls" and "The blind and bloody soldier with foul hand Defile the locks of your shrill-shrieking daughters". Both of these are logos because they appeal to our ability to think. So these quotes make the audience think about these things because this is what will happen if they don't fight to protect their families and city.
